Buzzing along……….

Sorry for the lack of updates to those who keep up with my posts.  It’s been busy over here and dealing with personal matters leave hardly any time for our blog.  I am way behind and have lots of stuff to share from the last month or two.

To keep it funky fresh we dynoed Javier’s Z32 TT a couple months ago.  It was a pleasure to meet him and his family.  Javier is a Floridian who made the move over to non-humid SoCal.  I am not a fan of that Florida weather, sorry dad.

Javier has a very clean Z32, his mod list escapes my memory.  I’m pretty sure he has 2560R turbos.  Javier if your reading this e-mail me your mod list. UPDATE, his mod list is as follows:

The Straman

My long time friend had his Straman upgraded with larger turbos (2560Rs) a few months ago and after installing the Selin Dual POP kit we went to work on tuning his beast.

Some may not know but Straman was a company in SoCal that took cars not offered in covertible versions from the OEMs and made them convertibles.  1990 seems to be the only year Straman rendered their services on the Z32 TT.   Hydraulic actuated top and some very good bracing make this a Z32 TT feel better than the OEM Verts.

Jason’s Straman comes equipped with:

  • 2560R Turbos
  • SZ\300 Degree 740 Fuel Kit
  • Stock Block & Heads
  • MSP Manifolds
  • SZ 3″ Downpipes
  • SZ 3″ to 2.5″ Test Pipes
  • SZ 2.5″ Single Oval Tip Catback
  • 2.5″ I\C Piping
  • Ash Massives
  • Z1 58mm Throttle Bodies
  • Selin Dual POP Kit

Peak boost hits by 4400 RPM (17 psi) and tapers down to 16-15 psi the rest of the way.  444whp and matching torque.

Stay tuned for 100 & Q results!

Demolishing the Stock Z32 Turbo Record

The results in the following post are unbelievable and truly shows the potential of the Z32-TT with stock turbos.  This also goes to show that factory intercooler piping is restrictive at the stock turbo level and that high quality MS Manifolds help them push harder.  There hasn’t been anyone to date to do this on stock MT turbos so here goes!

Adam did not skimp out on anything when it came to building this Z.  You buy high quality parts you get high quality results.

The following is the list of mods done to this wonder:

91 octane, 14 psi for 419 whp!

100 octane, 20 psi for 463 whp.

Q16, 21 psi peak for 499 whp!!!!!!!!  For those of you with larger turbos using stock I\C piping, manifolds, small exhaust, etc.. your choking your VG30!

This is the comparison to the previous record.  What a difference!!  Smooth power throughout the powerband.

Congratulations to Adam!  Remember to keep your turbos boosted people!

The Z with lots of Turbo(s)

Joel from NorCal has a very unique Z32.  No, it doesn’t have a single turbo or RB26 swap.  It posses two angry turbochargers strapped to the front of the ever loving VG30 and an intercooler sitting where the radiator usually does.  It uses the TDM Works Front Mount Turbo, V-Mount Intercooler, and Radiator Kit.  Fuel is pumped through by 2x Z32 TT fuel pumps and sprayed out by RC 1000cc injectors and BDE Rails.  All of this bolted to a built bottom end and controlled by the factory ECU with some SZ love.

All of this adds up to a wild ride down the highway.  It does come with its lag but one must pay the price with a setup configured like this.  This baby churns out 17-18 psi on 91 octane.  Is does this with a very efficient setup.  For now its only making “low” boost to finalize engine break in before we see 30+ psi.  This is when the real party starts on turbos this large.

Video of it in action:

3076 Beast on the rollers.

We tuned it all up for a healthy 560+ whp on our lovely CA 91 octane.  A little nitrous shot down low would make for a hairy ride down the 1\4 mile.

Stay tuned for more action.

A Good Dose of Caffeine (Boost)

We took this daily driven Z32 owned by Jason & Nikki and injected it with some good ole fashioned mods.  Believe it or not this car started out life as a 5-speed and was converted to accept an SZ Stage 1 Automagic Trans.  This Z32 posses’ a “fresh” JDM engine with the auto A\R turbos (smaller than 5-speed turbos).  When the engine was dropped in we dynoed the car to see how it performed with factory boost levels, full SZ 2.5″ exhaust, and single POP.  We then added our SZ 3″ Downpipes, SZ 3″ to 2.5″ Test Pipes, JWT Dual Pop w\ Selin Translator, Blitz SBC iD-Spec-R Boost Controller, and SZ custom tune.  It still has factory intercoolers too.

Turbos are truly an amazing thing.  Boost and Zs rule!  Like my bud Rob Fuller would say.  You can see the “before” and “after” results below.

Say “ahhhhhh” (At the doctor’s office)

That’s right folks, almost 100 RWTQ gained by 4000 RPM.  Time to shred some tires and laugh at Prius owners!  For those who have trouble reading a dyno graph, the red lines are the “before” runs and the blue lines are the “after” runs.  The fainter of the lines are Torque and the darker are HP.

Dr. Dean

Dean finally got his Z tuned this week.  We’ve been so busy over here at SZ that we didn’t have a chance the last several months to get his monster the proper attention required.    His mod list can be seen here:  Dean’s Mod List

He plans to make the upcoming June 12th IDRC event, competing in the True Street Class.  The dyno graph below shows his race fuel tune on boost and also on nitrous.  One can see how well the nitrous works, it is only used to get out of the gate and shuts off at 5500 RPMs.  This should be enough to get him into the 9s.  Now go kick some ass!

No, that’s not Dean with the pot belly.

Zeetoyz Oil Cap

Finally an oil cap where the logo can be moved independently of the physical cap location.  Hooray!  Seriously though, this is indeed a nice feature and the quality is great.  I had to have this cap to add a little more blue and delete the Nismo oil cap.  Thanks Terry!

The Lone Star Z

Where do we begin this story?  Well its a long one and there’s no need for specifics.  We can say it has a happy ending.  I hope that didn’t spoil it for ya ;).  Dave brought us his red gem child from the big state of Texas for some fixin’ after the wrench hit the spokes in his prior builds.  Along the way to Z nirvana, this Z received some funky fresh mods.  It arrived at our door with a freshly built engine, larger CZP 2560R turbos aka “GT28Rs”, MSP Manifolds, SZ 3″ Down Pipes, Nismo “old skool” 555cc Injectors, JWT 400 cams, JWT Dual POP, etc… (the important mods).  We performed various seances to rid the evil spirits and added SZ 3″ to 2.5″ test pipes and SZ 2.5″ dual tip catback.  It had that nasty ole’ Borla catback and 2.5″ test pipes (good riddance).  Added some CZP silver I\C piping, Ash Massives, and Z1 T.B.s to round out the “charge” side.

The Z was dynoed back in Texas before we got our hands on it shortly after its latest build.  Depressed with the paltry results of 365 whp, its owner decided for drastic measures.

Loaded with some Texas 93 octane we kicked off the dyno tuning fun.  I forgot what “real” fuel smelled like from other non-smog Nazi states.  Hell would freeze over if California got 93 octane one day.  Its amazing how 2 octane points help.  Luckily we have quite a few local gas stations that offer 100 octane at the pump.

A little cleaner.

Just another day at the spa.

Here’s how the Z performed on 93 octane & Q16:

510 whp & 465 torque on Texan 93 octane and 587 whp & 545 torque on Q16.

In a week or two this Z will be on a trailer to go back to her owner.  Enjoy the ride!

ZONAZ

John, in the last year or so has brought his beautiful Z32s over to us for tuning.  His yellow Z has Sport 700 turbos, IPP engine, stock cams, MSP Manifolds, Nismo 740cc injectors, SZ full 3″ exhaust, Z1 TBs, CZP I\C piping & Ash Massives,  and dual POP with Selin elbows.  All available from our new store.  John did the work himself and did an excellent job on both cars.  Better work than I’ve seen from other pro shops.  Two thumbs up!  John has the help from his son Connor when it comes to working on the Zs.  Connor has been an integral part of John’s SZ trips.  Connor also lends a hand around SZ if needed.  This last time John brought his family to enjoy some of the SoCal sights.

The Zs soaking up the rays in SoCal beach weather.

His red Z is equipped with Sport 530s, Nismo 740cc Injectors, MSP Manifolds, SZ 3″ downpipes and test pipes that cone down to 2.5″.  Stock I\C piping, Stillen Intercoolers, and dual pop round off the majority of the engine mods.  You may notice he has a roll bar in this Z.  John plans on participating in some local AZ time attack events.  Both of his Zs are running proto SZ MAP sensors.  No MAFs on these Zs.  Nice since his yellow Z has BOVs.  This is one of the new products we’re working on in the near future.  There’s still some more work tweaking to be done.

Clean execution from Yellow Bird.

Blue is 91 octane, Red is 100 octane, and Green is Q16.

The Red Phoenix.  More sleeper with a hint of SPL Coilover Blue.

Blue is 91 octane and Green is 100 octane.

The Zonaz kids: Connor & Jill.

Back to Z

The last 6+ months have been hectic for me to say the least.  Health issues, work, and personal matters take priority when it comes to the Z.  My Z32 was down for over a year (Oct 08) and I was anxious to get it back on the road before my surgery.  I was worried that if I didn’t get to it before then (Dec 09) I may never have a chance to work on it again if something happened in surgery.  I was told I could have been paralyzed and\or worse.   My current Z32 didn’t and doesn’t have anything wild as some may think.  I wanted something tame on the street but with enough gitty up and go to get the job done.  In a time and financial crunch I got it back together with the help of some friends and my fiancee.  Knowing it was running before I went in for surgery was a big load off my back.  I could peacefully rest knowing it was running and safe in my own garage at home.  This past weekend I did some data-logging for a prototype part and since it was strapped down decided to tune it for 91 octane.  This was also a good baseline for when I upgrade to larger intercoolers & piping.

I didn’t upgrade much this last time the VG30DETT was out, but just enough for some small power upgrades and great reliability.  It currently has:

  • Stock Block\Ported Heads
  • Custom regrind camshafts
  • JWT Sport 500s
  • MS Manifolds
  • SZ Turbo Inlet Piping (replaces accordion hose)
  • Old School Nismo 555cc Injectors
  • SZ Built Automagic Stage Race w\ triple plate converter & SZ Flex Plate (I like the auto)
  • BDE Engine Mounts (In case the bigger turbo bug gets me)
  • Full SZ 3″ SS Exhaust (Turbos-all the way back)
  • Z1 Larger TBs (For when the time came for larger piping & I\Cs)
  • Stock Stillen Intercoolers\ Stock Piping
  • Electric Fans
  • UD Pulley & HI OD Pulley
  • SZ Oil Pan

Pretty basic nothing crazy.  I was curious to see how much power it would make with the auto since it robs a little more power especially when turning up the pump pressure.  This car, when it was first put together in 2002 with the same turbos made an impressive 487 whp on race fuel back then.  When I bought it from my customer a few years ago it was “well abused”  and worn.  I dynoed it when I bought it shortly thereafter with race fuel and it only made 430 whp.  I beat on it while road racing and that was the end of it temporarily (stock oiling system sucks).  Fast forward to today and we have a happier Z back on the road.  Road racing is designated to another vehicle in the fleet.  This baby will live its life as a weekend cruiser and occasional drag strip runner.  Hoping to beat my best 11.3 ET (done on lower power) now with funky fresh powerful mods.

and the results were…………

414 whp and 411 torque.  I was certainly happy with the results having only run it on 91 octane.  The first run was before and the last run 7 was its final tune.  This will give me\us good info when only adding larger I\C piping and intercoolers.  Stay tuned for more on my project Z32.
