After Hours: Mustang Edition"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>You may wonder why a Mustang made it&#8217;s way into SZ. \u00a0It was my first performance car I purchased when I got my first job in high school. \u00a0It&#8217;s what got me into cars. \u00a0I started modifying it in my teenage years and it gave me a very rudimentary introduction to the world of automotive workings. \u00a0I added a Vortech Supercharger Kit shortly after buying the car. \u00a0Back then the kits would only supply you with larger injectors and a piggyback Super Chips PCM module. \u00a0At that time California had 92 octane so it survived for over 20,000 miles. \u00a0After that California went to 91 octane with MTBE and the 4.6 2V engine in the Mustang lost its engine, add to the fact that its factory fuel pump and piggyback PCM were also recipes for disaster. \u00a0It developed rod knock and low compression in a couple cylinders. \u00a0The car sat for over 7 years until this year when we breathed life back into the pony.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/specialtyz.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/photo.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2029\" alt=\"photo\" src=\"http:\/\/specialtyz.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/photo.jpg\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">It sat for so long we had to dig it out of the dirt it was sitting in. \u00a0Rats and other animals called the engine bay home.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/specialtyz.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/photo-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" up thanks to our friends. \u00a0The old engine was torn down for scrap metal.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/specialtyz.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/photo-13.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2032\" alt=\"photo (13)\" href=\"http:\/\/specialtyz.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/photo-6.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2034\" alt=\"photo (6)\" src=\"http:\/\/specialtyz.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/photo-6.jpg\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.specialtyz.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/photo-6.jpg 800w, replacement came in the form of a brand new MMR longblock. \u00a0The new block is aluminum vs cast iron to save a tremendous amount of weight. \u00a0Updated PI heads were added along with larger valves and Comp Stage 1 Cams. \u00a0Diamond Pistons and rods, along with a forged Cobra crankshaft were added. \u00a0Wrinkle blue powdercoated Trick Flow Valves and Trick Flow Intake Manifold was installed. \u00a0C&amp;L throttle body was added as well. \u00a0We went with Siemens 60 lb\\hr injectors and 90mm Lightning MAF. \u00a0BBK shorty headers bolted to the heads which then lead to a Bassani X-Pipe with high flow cats and finally to a Bassani catback.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/specialtyz.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/photo-3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2035\" alt=\"photo (3)\" src=\"http:\/\/specialtyz.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/photo-3.jpg\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.specialtyz.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/photo-3.jpg 800w, https:\/\/blog.specialtyz.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/photo-3-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">We added two Nissan knock sensors to monitor for knock.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/specialtyz.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/photo-5.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2036\" alt=\"photo (5)\" src=\"http:\/\/specialtyz.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/photo-5.jpg\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.specialtyz.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/photo-5.jpg 600w, https:\/\/blog.specialtyz.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/photo-5-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">LJ &amp; Jonathan carefully tape up the valve covers prior to dropping the motor.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/specialtyz.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/photo-4.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2037\" alt=\"photo (4)\" src=\"http:\/\/specialtyz.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/photo-4.jpg\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.specialtyz.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/photo-4.jpg 600w, the motor out we upgraded to a tubular K-member and front coilover conversion. \u00a0This saved us over 80 lbs of weight. \u00a0The K came with all the parts for the swap and included tubular a-arms.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/specialtyz.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/photo-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2038\" alt=\"photo (2)\" src=\"http:\/\/specialtyz.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/photo-2.jpg\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.specialtyz.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/photo-2.jpg 800w, https:\/\/blog.specialtyz.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/photo-2-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">While things were moving along on the engine, we sent the V1 head unit to 928 Motorsports for a rebuild and upgraded to their billet wheel that looks very similar to Garrett&#8217;s GTX wheels. \u00a0We left the base pulley size as we were not planning on running an intercooler.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/specialtyz.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/photo-7.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2039\" alt=\"photo (7)\" src=\"http:\/\/specialtyz.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/photo-7.jpg\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.specialtyz.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/photo-7.jpg 800w, intake manifold we had to move the alternator out and away from the engine. \u00a0We also wired in our Meizre electric water pump at this stage.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/specialtyz.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/photo-8.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2040\" alt=\"photo (8)\" back a few days. \u00a0Turns out that the 1999 timing cover is different than the new engine&#8217;s 2000+ timing cover. \u00a0This forced us to buy a new bracket from Vortech.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/specialtyz.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/photo-11.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2041\" alt=\"photo (11)\" src=\"http:\/\/specialtyz.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/photo-11.jpg\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.specialtyz.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/photo-11.jpg 800w, https:\/\/blog.specialtyz.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/photo-11-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Finished product. \u00a0An Anderson Powerpipe replaces the old generic accordion hose for better breathing.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/specialtyz.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/seb99gt.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.specialtyz.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/seb99gt.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blog.specialtyz.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/seb99gt-300x161.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">We were impressed with the results! \u00a0It isn&#8217;t a Z but it&#8217;s still fun to drive. \u00a0441 whp on 91 octane. \u00a0For a V8 the torque is lacking but that&#8217;s what you get with a centrifugal blower and turbo compression pistons. \u00a0We used the SCT tuning software to tune it. \u00a0SVT Focus pump and Kenne Bell Boost a Pump send fuel to the Siemens injectors. \u00a0We&#8217;ve increased the rev limiter to 7250 so we hope to break into the 460 whp.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/specialtyz.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/photo-10.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2043\" alt=\"photo (10)\"
