{"id":1503,"date":"2012-03-08T08:40:50","date_gmt":"2012-03-08T16:40:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/specialtyz.com\/blog\/?p=1503"},"modified":"2013-09-15T14:00:41","modified_gmt":"2013-09-15T21:00:41","slug":"against-all-odds-and-a-monster-awakens","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.specialtyz.com\/?p=1503","title":{"rendered":"Against All Odds and a Monster Awakens"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Jon&#8217;s Z story is sadly alot like the other doom and gloom stories. \u00a0Thankfully after much love and a heavy therapy session at Specialty-Z there are no longer clouds looming over this Z.<\/p>\n<p>Mods are as follows:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Built Engine<\/li>\n<li>JWT 400 Cams<\/li>\n<li>HKS Turbos (unknown size, possibly 2530s)<\/li>\n<li>Tubular Exhaust Manifolds (mid-length)<\/li>\n<li>ASH 2.5&#8243; IC Piping &amp; Massives<\/li>\n<li>Larger Throttle Bodies<\/li>\n<li>ASH Inlet Pipe Kit<\/li>\n<li>Border 850cc Fuel Kit<\/li>\n<li>SZ modified 2.5&#8243; SS Downpipes<\/li>\n<li>Custom 3&#8243; Test Pipes &amp; Catback<\/li>\n<li>Twin Disc Clutch<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>After fixing the tremendous amount of issues we began to tackle this Z on the dyno for some data logging and tuning. \u00a0 After a few pulls we uncovered more issues that needed addressing. \u00a0The Z came us with solid intake cam gears. \u00a0We installed a set of BDE Intake Cam Gears to revive Nissan&#8217;s VTC system. \u00a0Unfortunately\u00a0we found that the VTCs were still not working. \u00a0We pulled the valve covers and found that the check valves were not installed in the back of the cams. \u00a0Adding the much needed check valves did the trick. \u00a0We also found that the fuel pressure was abnormal, very abnormal. \u00a0It was causing tuning grief and running too lean at 3300 RPM up until 4200 RPM. \u00a0This was remedied by\u00a0untangling\u00a0old bad work.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/specialtyz.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/fuelpressureproblem.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1505\" title=\"fuelpressureproblem\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/specialtyz.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/fuelpressureproblem.jpg\" width=\"880\" height=\"506\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.specialtyz.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/fuelpressureproblem.jpg 880w, https:\/\/blog.specialtyz.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/fuelpressureproblem-300x172.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 880px) 100vw, 880px\" \/><\/a>Fuel pressure reading on the lowest graph. \u00a0You can see how its running base fuel pressure up until 4200+RPM. \u00a0This is not good as you can see how lean it gets. \u00a0You can also see how it hurts power causing a <span style=\"text-decoration: line-through;\">nice<\/span> dip.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/specialtyz.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/fuelpressureoverlayfix.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1506\" title=\"fuelpressureoverlayfix\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/specialtyz.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/fuelpressureoverlayfix.jpg\" width=\"880\" height=\"506\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.specialtyz.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/fuelpressureoverlayfix.jpg 880w, https:\/\/blog.specialtyz.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/fuelpressureoverlayfix-300x172.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 880px) 100vw, 880px\" \/><\/a>Here is the graph (red run) after we fixed the fuel pressure issues. \u00a0The old bad run (blue) is displayed to show the obvious differences. \u00a035 torque and 35 whp gain.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/specialtyz.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/vtcfix.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1507\" title=\"vtcfix\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/specialtyz.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/vtcfix.jpg\" width=\"880\" height=\"506\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.specialtyz.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/vtcfix.jpg 880w, https:\/\/blog.specialtyz.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/vtcfix-300x172.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 880px) 100vw, 880px\" \/><\/a>This graph shows the dramatic difference that a working VTC system can make. \u00a0The blue run was prior to fixing the VTCs. \u00a0Red is after with the VTC system working. \u00a075 torque and 57 whp gain!!!!!! \u00a0Look at how the turbos react (boost curve).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">The most impressive thing about this Z is its ability to make power on 91 octane and its strength against the evil California fuel. \u00a0You can&#8217;t hold it back. \u00a0It will go all the way.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/specialtyz.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/final91dyno.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1509\" title=\"final91dyno\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/specialtyz.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/final91dyno.jpg\" width=\"880\" height=\"506\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.specialtyz.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/final91dyno.jpg 880w, https:\/\/blog.specialtyz.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/final91dyno-300x172.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 880px) 100vw, 880px\" \/><\/a>If you can&#8217;t see it clearly enough, that graph says 564 whp &amp; 501 torque. \u00a0It also says peak boost pressure of 20 psi. \u00a0All this on 91 octane. \u00a0A freak, an\u00a0anomaly, a monster. \u00a0This Z gets to have its cake and eat it too. \u00a0It also takes other people&#8217;s cakes and eats it too!
